A Christmas Carol
The first 6000 sold out during 19-22 December 1843! Two of four original hand-coloured illustrations by John Leech are far left. Having paid for production Dickens made little initial profit. But this book just ran on and on. Fostering charity and goodwill, the story also revived waning Christmas traditions. When Dickens died in 1870 a child asked if there would still be Christmas now!
This Bantam book cover has a happy Bob Crachit with his son Tiny Tim and a daughter. Are they visiting Ebenezer’s!
Visit of the Ghost of Christmas Present: on this journey a childlike Scrooge enjoys rich and poor festivities. He then meets two children, Ignorance and Want, the major causes of world suffering.
