Candle in the Wind 1997
Elton’s 1974 hit was a tribute to Marilyn Monroe. His friend Diana, Princess of Wales had comforted him at Versace’s funeral. She died one month later and Bernie Taupin wrote new lyrics at Elton’s request. He only performed it once - at her funeral. This fastest-selling single ever sold 33 million copies with the profits for Diana’s Memorial Fund.
