Heart of Gold
Introduction
This painting was issued in 2009 at a time when the value of gold is soaring due to the global recession. Car boot sales are scoured for old jewellery and for the first time “cash4gold” web sites are advertised on TV.
Hazle’s two Pateley Bridge models are from the Victorian High Street in this small town, set in the beautiful Yorkshire Dales. The rounded and bay windows are above, with the shop fronts partly obscured by awnings.

London’s Hatton Garden
In the old City some trades settled in specific regions. Hatton Garden in EC1 has been the jewellery centre since medieval times. Today there are nearly 300 related businesses and more than 55 shops. The name is from Sir Christopher Hatton, who was given the land by Queen Elizabeth I in 1581. Reputed to be her lover, she made him Lord Chancellor in 1587.
