Lock & Co
Introduction
Issued at the 2008 Collectors Day, this Limited Edition of 500 is the oldest business Hazle has modelled. Royal and celebrity hatters Lock & Co have been here virtually since 1676. A postcard from abroad was once simply addressed to, “The best hatters in the world, London.”
Issued to midshipmen in the late 1800s, the straw boater is now mostly seen at Henley Royal Regatta.
Collectors outside 6 St James’ Street on the London Walk in 2006. Dated 1676, stone or brick replaced timber buildings lost in the Great Fire of London in 1666.
An example of couture millinery. They also sell casual ladies’ hats.

Demand for Lock’s hat boxes after the “Sex & The City” film has resulted in a leather bag version, “The Carrie”.
UK/Europe £79.50

Lock’s issued the coke, bowler or derby in 1850. Hard shellac and a close fit protected game keepers from trees.
Mad Hatters’ Disease
This was also known as the Danbury Shakes from the US ”Hat City” in the 1800s. Fumes from mercury nitrate, used for matting fur fibres could cause damage to lungs, kidneys and nervous tissue - until it was banned in 1943. The Hatter in Lewis Carroll’s Alice in Wonderland, drawn by John Tenniel left, showed early signs of the illness - which sometimes led to death.
Top hats are now only made of polished fur felt, so Lock & Co also renovate vintage silk plush ones.
Lock’s interior is still very traditional.
