Shakespeare’s Othello

 Rococo plasterwork around the centre light.

In 2006 the Royal Theatre combined with a modern one behind as the Royal & Derngate. This award-winning arts complex now has, “a reputation for adventurous commissioning which few British theatres can match”, BBC 2016. The Errol Flynn Filmhouse opened at the site in 2013 on 20th June, his birthday!

 By theatre architect C J Phipps in Ancaster stone, this opened in 1884 and is now Grade II listed.

 Inspired by Commedia dell’arte and Hamlet’s mirror, a new safety curtain is the “Separator Painted”!

 Errol Flynn trained here at the Northampton Repertory in 1933-4, appearing in 22 plays that included Othello. He was inevitably fired for throwing a female stage manager down a stairwell! After stints in other theatres, Hollywood’s Warner Brothers signed him in 1935.
