Along with carols, classical music is performed in many places at Christmas. Handel’s Messiah and Bach’s Christmas Oratorio are among popular choices.

Christmas Carols
Carols were once celebratory communal songs. Folk carols sung outside at Christmas go back to the 13th century. In the 1800s composers repopularised carols. From 1880 many were sung in church as approved hymns. In the same year the first Festival of Nine Lessons and Carols, now used globally, took place at Truro. Carols are often based on medieval chord patterns, giving a characteristic sound.
