Introduction
Issued in 1995 as the Turret Pub, this retiring model has a perfect shape for this one-off theme.
A sweep’s chief role is to prevent fires and reduce toxic fumes from blocked flues. Collapsible brushes appeared in the mid 1800s and today vacuum suction is used as well. CCTV can be a diagnostic aid and sweeps often do installations and roof work too.

 Side Views: Our sweep is socially responsible! MP Lord Shaftesbury’s 1875 Climbing Boys Act finally ended the use of young, small boys.

 On Southend seafront, The Cornucopia is CAMRA’s Most Improved Pub 2007. Built circa 1890, exhibits at this former private Victorian Museum included deformed stuffed animals! The turret and gable are reversed on the ceramic.

Some UK towns host colourful Sweeps Events each year. Since 1983, the annual World Festival is enthusiastically celebrated by thousands in Italy. 

Sweeps in Literature
In Victorian times they were often depicted as heartless scoundrels, as in Kingsley’s The Water Babies and Dickens’ Oliver Twist. William Blake portrayed the sweep as an abused child in Songs of Innocence and Experience. The image is now one of good natured men such as Bert in Mary Poppins.

 When George II’s coach horses bolted a sweep pulled them up and saved the king, who declared all sweeps to be good luck bearers. Today they are invited to weddings.

 Bert and ensemble cast performing in the London musical of Mary Poppins.
