Royal Links in the Alice Books
Queen Victoria’s eldest son, later King Edward VII, studied at Christ Church College in Oxford under the specific care of Alice’s father the Dean, also University Vice-Chancellor. The Prince often took dinner with the Liddells and also spent the last three days of his honeymoon with Princess Alexandra at the Deanery. Oxford laid on lavish, gas illuminations and a packed schedule but the Princess still insisted on a croquet game with the Liddell children in the Deanery garden! Many of these Royal events were depicted in fantasy form, especially in the Looking Glass story.
